The Ultimate Guide to custom TRRS Cables for Split Keyboards
Ivailo KostadinovShare
Welcome to our comprehensive split keyboard cable guide and its significance in the realm of split keyboards. Whether you are a casual typist, a gamer, or a programmer, understanding the functionalities of your keyboard and its accessories can make your setup better.
This blog will delve into keyboard linking cables, discussing their advantages, applications, and distinctions in various types of keyboards.
But first, let's start with a short overview of the main character - the split mechanical keyboard. You can just skip this part if you are already familiar.
What is a Split mechanical keyboard?
A split mechanical keyboard is a type of keyboard that is divided into two separate sections (or halves), allowing the user to position each half at a comfortable angle or distance. This design promotes ergonomic use by enabling a more natural hand, wrist, and forearm position, which can reduce strain during extended typing sessions. Another benefit is that you can use only one of the halves, for example when gaming. That way you'll have more space on your desk.
In general, split keyboards are favoured by many typists, programmers, or gamers who prefer an ergonomic setup and customizable features to enhance their typing experience.
Some of the more popular split boards are SA Moonlander, Ergodox EZ, Voyager, Kyria Rev 3, Aurora Lily58, Aurora Corne, Iris Essential Model 2, Sofle 2.1 Choc.
What is a TRRS Cable and for what is it used?
A TRRS cable (Tip-Ring-Ring-Sleeve) is an audio and data transmission cable that features four conductors. Typically found in headsets and mini-jack connections, TRRS connectors are invaluable for devices that require both audio input and output, such as smartphones, tablets, and computers.
In the context of split keyboards, TRRS cables serve as linking cables that connect the two halves of the board. Custom TRRS cables can also be aesthetically tailored, providing a personalized touch to your setup. This is where we step in. It's just a cable, but it should not be. A custom linking cable can be tailored to match the vibe of your setup. Matching your keycaps, keyboard or even other hardware on your desk can elevate the look and feel of it.
Start customizing your TRRS cable by choosing your color theme.
Start with choosing the color of your linking cable. A lot of our color themes are inspired by custom keycaps. You will probably find a suitable theme for your setup. But if not, just send us a message with a photo of your setup. I'll be happy to help with a 100% free consultation. Here are some of our coiled TRRS cable themes.
How to choose the right TRRS cable for your split keyboard?
Should you choose a coiled TRRS cable or a straight one? How long do you need the coils to be? And what about the total length? This is probably the trickiest part, but don't worry. It's really not that complicated.
- Use as a starting point the distance between the 2 halves of your keyboards. More specifically the distance between your TRRS ports (or maybe USB C to C). If the distance is 8" for example, just add 2" for some extra, and the total length that you need. You can always get a longer cable if you prefer your TRRS cable in "U" shape, or maybe if you have something else in between your keyboards.
Note: It's Important to fit the cable to your keyboard and not the other way around. That way your productivity won't be affected in a negative way.
-
Coiled or not? It's really up to you. We have a lot of photos here and on our Instagram. If you like the way coiled cables look - go for it. If not, the straight TRRS cables are always a clean and safe option.
- Ports position. Most split keyboards have their ports placed on the backside, and in between the 2 halves. If you have a weird port placement, or maybe you are tenting your keyboard, you can use the note section for extra instructions, or you can message us. The placement of your ports will also determine between angled and straight TRRS connectors. Keep in mind, that the cable is flexible and you can shape it to your needs
-
For keyboards with TRRS ports on the back. You can use both of our cable directions - with angled, or straight ends. The photo below presents the difference between Direction 1 and Direction 2 (second photo). The difference between the Directions is the way the straight cable between the coil and the TRRS connector is pointing. With Direction 1 is going straight and with 2 is bended on 90 degrees. With Direction 2, the total length equals the length of the coiled part.
The easiest way to measure the length you need is to measure from port to port and add 2-5 cm., or more if tenting.
Our longer coils options are preferred here - 6",8" or 10".
-
For keyboards with linking ports in between the boards. For the coiled version 2" and 4" are most popular if the distance between your bords is up to 20-25cm. The flexibility of our cables allows some bending. This can also be useful if you are moving the boards further apart.

- If you are tenting your split boards. If you are tenting your mechanical keyboard or using an unorthodox position, my best advice is to get slightly longer cables, or at least longer ends (the straight cable between the last coil and the TRRS connector. For the longer ends, you can just add it as a note in the note section while ordering.
Matching your TRRS with a USB cable.
You can match the theme of your TRRS cable with custom USB cable. This will make your setup look complete and will get rid of the ugly black cables cluttering your desk. With all of our options, you can sculpt your cables to work the best for your setup. Setting your cables in order, and in the right colour and position can greatly increase not just the style of your setup, but your levels of productivity.

What are the benefits of custom TRRS cables over generic ones?
A much tidier desk and a better-looking setup overall. You don't really need one in terms of performance. But in terms of aesthetics, durability and quality of materials custom TRRS cables can improve your desk setup by a lot. Each cable is meticulously crafted by hand, elevating it to a work of art.
Some Technical information for the TRRS cables:
Electrical and Data Transmission in TRRS Cables
A TRRS connector has four contact points, each serving a different function in split keyboards. While configurations may vary depending on the keyboard’s PCB (Printed Circuit Board) design, the most common pinout is:
Contact | Function |
---|---|
Tip (T) | VCC (Power Supply, usually 3.3V or 5V) – Provides power from the master half to the slave half. |
Ring 1 (R1) | Ground (GND) – Establishes a common ground between both halves. |
Ring 2 (R2) | Clock (SCL) or Secondary Data Line – Used for communication, depending on the protocol. |
Sleeve (S) | Data (SDA) – Sends key press data between halves. |
Communication Protocols Used
Most split keyboards rely on I²C (Inter-Integrated Circuit) or UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver-Transmitter) for communication:
- I²C (Most Common) – Uses two wires (SCL for clock and SDA for data) to synchronize key presses. It allows the master half to query the slave half for key states.
- UART – Uses one wire for serial data transmission, where the master sends or receives data from the slave in a sequential manner.
What’s the difference between TRRS and TRS cables?
TRRS vs. TRS: TRRS has four contacts (Tip-Ring-Ring-Sleeve) for data + power, while TRS has three (Tip-Ring-Sleeve) for audio only. Split keyboards need TRRS, as TRS won’t transmit data, causing one half to stop working. Always check your keyboard’s specs!
Are these linking cables compatible with your keyboard?
Most split keyboards use 3.5mm TRRS cables, but some rare builds might require 2.5mm connectors. Always check your keyboard’s specifications before purchasing a cable. So far all of our TRRS to TRRS cables are compatible with 100% of the split keyboards in the market like Corne, Kyria, ErgoDox EZ, Moonlander, Lili58, Sofle and many more.
In conclusion.
Choosing the right custom TRRS cable is essential for ensuring a reliable connection between your split mechanical keyboard halves. A high-quality cable not only enhances performance and durability but also adds a personal touch to your setup.
